Hello my friends,
On the surface it is really easy to say that family comes before work and yes I am in total agreement with it. However over the past few weeks, I can admit that sometimes work if not kept in perspective, can take a life of its own and bump family down to that second notch if you are not careful.  First of all, like you, I am really thankful for my family and there is no place in the world I would rather be than to be with them. Secondly, I am really thankful to be working and doing what I enjoy doing everyday, which is being an entrepreneur and spending the bulk of my work time doing internet marketing, leadership and motivational speaking and social/sports activities.
In my speaking engagements and team meetings, I have always said “to invest as much or more quality time with your family than your businessâ€, however, I must admit that I don’t always live by what I teach. That is not a good thing (if it’s good enough for me to teach it well it ought to be good enough for me to live by it) but I am a bit stubborn when it comes to getting work done. I have so many goals, so many aspirations and want so much out of life that sometimes I just push everything aside to make things happen and get everything accomplished. Great idea to get work done however not too good when you set your family aside.
Now that I have that out of the way, during my “downtime” holiday break, I took some time to not only check myself but watch others to see if I was the only one veering to the left. If you would have said that families were highly engaged with each other then you would be far from it. Because what I noticed and heard from others was that even though the family were all together physically, mentally they were preoccupied with work and other social happenings all over the place .
The way most of us work in these times with all of the latest technologies bringing our world closer, as soon as that “dumb” smartphone or computer BEEPS with the latest email notification, business appointment, news and believe it or not, social media (facebook, twitter, linkedin, etc…) posts, our attention suddenly drifts from our physical conversation with our family or loved one, to that unknown person or newsfeed on the other end of the beep. Has this ever happened to you? Did you answer immediately or did you keep your 100% attention on the family member in your presence?
As a professional marketer, the majority of my time is spent in front of a computer screen working, researching, marketing, listening, talking and watching the latest happenings all over the globe. Recently, I did something that I haven’t done in a long time and that was turn my smartphone off, left my computer at home and went seemingly way back in time, to have an enjoyable 3 day weekend with my family and other family members. The first 24 hours, I was craving and feenin to look at computer screen or hear an email or notification beep; I was like “Pookie” the drug addict character played by Chris Rock on the movie New Jack City, feenin for a drug hit. After I got past that initial 24 hour time period everything became clearer as far paying more attention to (lack of a better word) the outside world and my family.
I can’t tell you how much better connected I feel now listening to all of the “new” stories that have happened all around me, all the while thinking that I am in the know with everything going on in my house. I realize (yet again) that there are far more important things around me than my work, but it’s easy to forget that lesson, if you never let your mind process not just the work you are doing but why you are doing it. These things may or may not be happening in your lives right now and if it is, hopefully this post helps you shut off the beeps from time to time and allow that family time to stay number one so you can really focus on what should be our most important part of your life.
Now if I can just get my wife and my dad to silence their beeps and screens, what a happier family we will be.
