Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man – April Book of the Month
This book is written by Emmanuel Acho who is a former NFL Player and currently working as a Fox Sports 1 Analyst. He does a masterful job of introducing the subject, providing some historical context, making things uncomfortable then setting the table to have the conversation to increase our understanding and join the anti-racist fight.
A couple of things to think about!
What do you see when you see me?
Implicit bias
We have to discuss our biases, to learn more about them, critique them, to try to trace where they come from. In order for us to conquer our implicit biases, we have to speak openly and honestly about them.
***Pay special attention to your biases when you are stressed because this is when they are more likely to pop up without you noticing.
Prejudice is an emotional commitment to ignorance – Nathan Rutstein
Again unconscious prejudices can manifest as racist actions, that’s the whole problem. Try to identify your prejudices and hold them up to scrutiny.
