Business History Lesson and Legend for You – Reginald Lewis
This post is brief however I want to make you aware of a man, Reginald F. Lewis – my business entrepreneur hero, that took business to a whole other level and inspired many brothers and sisters to do the same.
When I first heard of Reginald Lewis, back in 1997, I was at a business conference and I immediately went out and bought his book, “Why Should White Guys Have all the Fun? – How Reginald Lewis created a Billion Dollar Business Empire”.
The extraordinary story of Lewis’s rise from working-class neighborhood in east Baltimore to become the wealthiest black man in history and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time. “What makes Lewis’s story intriguing is the arena in which he matched wits, nerves and skills – the world of the corporate elite of high finance. Lewis truly played with the big boys.” (The Atlanta Tribune)
Lewis was his own toughest critic. I like the story he shared regarding a deal he was working didn’t close, so he took some time away with family to rest and reflect on why the deal fell through. He had been telling himself that “he was not ready” however after being outside and helping his daughter ride her bike, a thought came on him and that was, “WELL, IF YOU ARE NOT READY, ALL RIGHT THEN GET READY-GET READY.”
He passed away at the young age of 50 and the list of those persons at the funeral and memorial service read like a who’s who of all fields of industry present.
So my friend, add this book to your library as well as the man, Reginald F. Lewis, on your list of business icons and like Mr. Lewis once stated, If you are not ready, all right then Get Ready, Get Ready!
