Wow, I was cleaning out my attic and going through some old business forms and got a kick out of seeing all of my old prospecting and phone call lists from a few years ago. Pounding the phones was standard operating procedure for me during my insurance sales career and I must admit, I was pretty good at it, being called and asked to train other sales agents about getting leads and sales from the telephone. Seeing those old prospecting lists cracked me up, because now I probably make less than 20 phone calls a week and sometimes this is too much depending on what business line of products being discussed.
By using online business systems to earn a living, it’s hard to imagine making phone calls quite like I did back then. I get emails sometimes asking why I don’t return phone calls anymore! The short answer would be instead of pounding the phones making 100-200 calls for 8-10 hours a day, now I have a 4-5 hour work day and accomplish WAY more and SUPPORT more people at the same time, using different online business systems and resources.
Please don’t get me wrong, I do believe that depending on what business or industry you are in that the phone calls can play a vital role in your business. Even with the online business model, I encourage my team and new business partners coming on board, that if there is a certain level of income or product sales you are trying to reach, you want to do whatever it takes to get you there and many times phone calls coupled with our online strategies can do this for you. Your centers of influence and people that you know on a personal basis, yes sure give them a call to introduce them to your business opportunity.
However as you are building your team, you will come to realize that there is not enough time in the day to be on the phones calling out to prospects and then returning calls to both prospects and team members to render the service and support that they need as well as creating business income streams to support your lifestyle.
One of the biggest reasons I fell head over heels for the online business model was because this system would allow me the time freedom to do things with my family, organizations and other activities that I hold dear and also the financial freedom to fund these and other activities. Having my online business systems frees up time for me and my business partners to think and create as oppose to feeling tied down to my desk at a job. Using online resources like webinars, google hangouts, skype, screensharing, etc… condense 8 hours of time on the phone down to 2-3 hours on webinars asnswering questions on a group setting instead of 1 person on each call.
*Here is an important note to keep in mind about the phones. To get people to join your business, returning phone calls are so much more powerful that actually picking up the phone and making cold calls on a list or yellow pages. When returning calls at least you know, in some sorts, that you have someone showing an interest in what you do.
I must admit that from time to time even with all of my online systems in place, I still like the feeling I get when I return a call and talk to someone interested in what I do and we become business partners. I guess those old phone call roots will never totally go away, so it’s kinda the best of both worlds.
