I like to start the new year with books, articles and videos on mindset and making sure I’m starting the year off as mentally strong as I can be.

This book Can’t Hurt Me – Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins is one for the ages considering that it is being written by a retired Navy SEAL and the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces ever to complete SEAL training, U.S. Army Ranger School, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller training.

From the very first page here’s the Warning Order…
Time Zone: 24/7
Task organization: Solo mission

1. Situation: You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realizing your true potential.
2. Mission: To unshackle your mind. Ditch the victim’s mentality forever. Own all aspects of your life completely. Build an unbreakable foundation. 
3. Execution:
   A. Read this cover to cover. Study the techniques within, accept all ten challenges. Repeat. Repetition will callous your mind.
   B. If you do your job to the best of your ability, this will hurt. This Mission is not about making yourself feel better. This Mission is about being better and having a greater impact on the world.
   C. Don’t stop when you are tired. Stop when you are done.

Here are a few take-aways that I needed to remind myself on and it will serve me well throughout the days.

Armored mind – to develop an armored mind, a mindset so calloused and hard that it becomes bulletproof. You need to go to the source of ask of your fears and insecurities.

Most of the time we don’t rise to the level of our expectations we fall to the level of our training. 

The sole reason I work out like I do isn’t to prepare for and win ultra races. It’s to prepare my mind for life itself. Life will always be the most grueling endurance sport and when you train hard, get uncomfortable and callous your mind, you will become a more versatile competitor, trained to find a way forward no matter what. 

Your entitled mind is dead weight. Cut it loose. Don’t focus on what you think you deserve. Take aim on what you are willing to earn!

When you get a moment to add another book to your collection and strengthen your mindset for bigger challenges and higher levels, Can’t Hurt Me is the book for you.

The Village Elders Coming Back to Share!

To see the vision, the work put in and the results from it with Head Librarian Lori Stimpson Arteaga (Griffin Alum Class of 1980), Dr. Henry, the Administrators, teachers and most importantly, the young men of the 5th grade, was and is definitely a highlight among highlights of my life.

From what was shared today, my prayer is that deep in these young men hearts, they will bury that seed of hope, that seed of belief in themselves and that seed of faith in something bigger than all of us, to grow into something positive to make an invaluable impact with their families, their communities and in the world we live in.

I finally finished this book, Relentless – From Good to Great to Unstoppable By Tim S. Grover and when I tell you it will tighten up your mindset, get your hands on this book and dedicate some time reading it.

Tim is a former trainer to many of the most intense athletes and champions, such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade, and he shares the tea leaves on what makes these athletes relentless and unstoppable until the end result is complete.

The word Relentless is used in sports to describe the most intense competitors and achievers imaginable, those who stop at nothing to get to the end result. In sports, being relentless is measurable by victories and trophies and championships and rings.

In real life, being relentless is a state of mind that can give you the strength to achieve, to survive, to overcome, to be strong when others are not. It means craving the end result so intensely that the work becomes irrelevant. Not just in sports, but in everything you do.
The ability to be relentless is in all of us.

Tim devised a three-tiered system that categorizes different types of competitors: Coolers, Closers and Cleaners. Good, Great and Unstoppable. You can apply these standards to any group of individuals; just look around your team, your office, your friends and family. If you want to be unstoppable (Cleaner), you’ve got to make the commitment.

A Simple Breakdown

A Cooler is careful; he waits to be told what to do, watches to see what everyone else is doing and then follows the leader. He’s the setup guy, keeping things cool until the Closer or Cleaner can take over.

A Closer can handle a lot of pressure; he’ll get the job done if you put him in the right situation and tell him exactly what you need him to do. He’ll study all sorts of scenarios so he can anticipate what might happen, but he’s uncomfortable when faced with something unexpected.

A Cleaner is rarely understood and he likes it that way. He is not intimidated by pressure, he thrives on it. He may not love the work but he’s addicted to the results. He keeps pushing himself harder when everyone else has had enough.

Here are a few examples:

Coolers worry about the competition and how they measure up.
Closers study the competition and plan their attack based on the opponent.
Cleaners make the competition study them; they don’t care whom they’re facing, they know they can handle anyone.

Coolers won’t offer to take on a role they’re not comfortable with.
Closers will take the role if you ask them and they’ll do it well, if they have enough time to prepare for and study the situation.
Cleaners don’t wait to be asked, they just do it.

Coolers think they want the spotlight, but when they get it, they usually handle it badly.
Closers stand in front because they need to show who’s in charge.
Cleaners don’t have to show who’s in charge… Everyone already knows!

They say a young man spends his health trying to get wealthy. While an old man spends his wealth trying to get healthy!

I share this pic to remind our business owners, civic leaders, staff personnel and employees that keeps our economy strong and vibrant, to get those vital health checkups on a regular basis. We need You to be here making a difference in the lives of others.

I thank God first and the doctors for a great report on my health and I appreciate my network for the many prayers for me during my colonoscopy procedure.

Let’s continue to pray for a healing for those persons that are battling and overcoming their health issues as well.

Oh yeah, I’m a sucker for those animal cookies however since I’m a Lion, it’s hard for me to eat the Lions cookies in the pack

This book is a collection of executive and investment advice that Bear Stearns Chairman of the Board, Alan C, “Ace” Greeberg used in email memos to rally the troops to success. The content from the email memos cover a timespan from 1978 – 1995.

Mr. Greenberg uses 2 characters, Haimchinkel Malintz Anaynikal and Itzhak Nanook Pumpernickanaylian in the book to act as advisors to him personally, to emphasize his business lessons and office culture behavior to company’s personnel.

From advising the executives on when to get into a certain business line, to communicating to business units on sharing fax machines instead of ordering more and to reuse paper clips, file folders and other office supplies to make the employees more conscious of opportunities and expenses.

The Memos from a Chairman are both witty and funny to say the least and coming from a Chairman or CEO level, will definitely make you think about business from a different perspective. The one takeaway that is repeated several times in the memos, are from the words of his “famous philosopher”, Haimchinkel Malintz Anaynikal is, “thou will do well in commerce as long as thou does not believe in thine own odor is perfume.”
