I’ve been working in the online marketing game for a little over 8 years doing all kinds of stuff that money can buy. I am a blogger, social media marketer and branding consultant, e-commerce selling with Amazon, ebay and shopify, however the one online business that I really enjoy doing is that of affiliate marketing.

This post will not cover the basics of affiliate marketing but I want to go deeper than the basics because I’ve identified an area that is not talked about much and this is an area that holds newbies back from getting their fair share of what this affiliate marketing business can offer them.

Affiliate marketing is a simple business and one of the main issues that I am seeing when people get into it is the lack of a plan. The lack of a true guide to setting your online business up and earning money from it. C’mon Amazon, it’s the start of a new month and this is how you show up? What I’m noticing is that you are working a little in the morning and a little in the evening but we need you grinding every hour.

Unconscious Incompetent – starting something new for the first time and have no clue of what’s going on and what to do. Example – “I heard about a simple way of making money online through affiliate marketing. What is affiliate marketing and how do I get started?”

Conscious/Incompetence – Know what’s going on you just don’t know what to do and how to do it. Example – “I know there are ways I can make money recommending to others, all sorts of products and services that I use for myself, I still don’t know how to do it.”

Conscious/Competence – You know what’s going on and you have to think about however you know what to do. Example – “Ok, now I have signed up to be an affiliate with different companies and brands and I know how to use my computer to promote different products.”

Unconscious/Competence – It’s automatic! You don’t even have to think about it and you know what to do! Example – “I finally have systems and products in place for me to recommend products on a daily basis without much thought given as to how to do it. I am also teaching others how to do it as well.”

Learning How to Make Money Online

When I first started making money online over 6 years ago, that 1 stage was exciting as well as frustrating. With my basic understanding of making money online, it’s safe to say that on a daily basis, I operate more from phase 3 and phase 4 however with the many advances of technology, new tools and services that are constantly being launched,  I have to be completely open to being in phase 1 and 2. This is how we grow!
