In today’s post we will discuss simple concept #7 which is Adaptability.
“When you’re finished changing, you’re finished.” -Ben Franklin

empowernetworkadapt
There has never been a faster-changing marketplace than the one we live in today. Leaders must be flexible in managing changing opportunities
and challenges and nimble enough to pivot at the right moment. Stubbornness is no longer desirable to most organizations. Instead, humility and
the willingness to adapt mark a great leader.

Checkout this video below from Rafe Sagarin, a marine ecologist and environmental policy analyst, as he discussed business adaptability with a
pointed story of how a noted Airline is able to adapt.

Beyonce’ was all over my house this weekend and I have my 7 year old daughter, Lauryn, to thank. First, she is my daughter’s favorite singer and entertainer and she can do no wrong when it comes to dancing and wearing those fabulous outfits. Yeah I guess I can say that those outfits she wears are ok, however I’m a little cautious with my daughter when it comes to her trying to dance and shake her hips and all of that stuff. Hold up a minute, let’s sit and calm down a little bit, you know what I mean.

beyonce1

Well anyway, her just released self produced documentary titled; “Beyonce – Life is But a Dream came on along with her exclusive interview with Oprah soon afterward. We had magazines with her pictures plastered all over our kitchen and dining room tables along with her dance moves being displayed on every TV set in the house. Like I stated before, Beyonce’ was all over my house and for Lauryn, this was the best weekend of her young life. On the replay of the documentary and the interview, I agreed to watch it with my daughter only if she would sit beside me and listen instead of dancing every five minutes.

lauryn director

For someone like Beyonce’ who has been performing and singing at a high level for a long time and have experienced so much success at what she does, I knew she would share some inspirational “nuggets” and I wanted my daughter to listen and absorb. I wanted to take this time to help her understand on a very basic level that there is more to Beyonce’s success than just showing up in the studio and on the dance floor. To my surprise, there I was with a notepad full of inspiring notes and ideas that was valuable to say the least and I will share the highlights with you on this post.

Here are some of those nuggets:

THINKING – She stated that she have to think about finances, think about being practical, think about her future, think about investments and to be serious and continue to think things through.

A BUSINESS WOMAN – Sher learned from her father that it is difficult being polite and being in business because it does not work too well. You have to be fair and most importantly, be fair to yourself!

BEING AN ARTIST – Be an artist sometimes things just don’t make sense. Life is speaking to us all of the time and we have to slow down and pay attention. Do things when she is inspired. When you are an artist, an entertainer, you have to believe you are an artist, set standards and express your art for the right reasons.

BEING IN THE ZONE – When you are in that zone, you feel at home, there’s a fire inside and you have that feeling that you know exactly what you are doing and you are doing it. Oprah mentioned that being in the zone is when Art meets God! Oprah also stated that during the Super Bowl Halftime performance, Beyonce’ just didn’t meet the moment, she owned the moment!

HIGHER POWER – God is Real, he lives inside of me.

MAKING DECISIONS – There are no trumpets or drum rolls going off when you are making the biggest decisions of your life. Sometimes you don’t know that you are making them at the time.

TRUST YOURSELF – At the hardest moments in life when you feel that you are not strong enough or you are not ready, you put in the work then you just have to jump.

SELF AWARENESS/TRANSPARENCY – Know who you are, stay on the edge and stay relevant. Mystique is also important but you have to stop pretending that you have it all together, all of the time. When you are scared be scared, release it. After you release it you become stronger, braver.

At the end of the Oprah Interview, Oprah gave Beyonce one of the biggest compliments that really opened my daughter’s eyes and it was taken from Maya Angelou; “You make me proud to spell my name… W-O-M-A-N. I personally believe that this quote says it best for all of the women out here making an impact and a difference in the lives of others.

Yes I must admit that I, like most men, am a big fan of Beyonce and her dance moves however I am truly a fan of someone that is doing what they loved to do and being successful at it. At the end of the night, I mentioned to my wife that it was a good night for Lauryn to not only see her favorite performer do her thing on stage but also to get a little understanding on Beyonce’s thoughts and mindset on her life away from the bright lights and big crowds.

We did have fun singing and dancing to those catchy beats but now I am a bit overloaded with Beyonce’ to say the least. Now the week just started, we cleaned off the tables and cut the TV off because it’s that time again with school for Lauryn and work for the wife and I. In a few days, I will have a chance to figure out who we will have over to the house for next weekend.

On this post we will touch on a simple concept of becoming a better leader that is highly overlooked, in my opinion, and that is Responsiveness.
The best leaders are responsive to their customers, staff, investors, and prospects. Every stakeholder today is a potential viral sparkplug, for better or for worse, and the winning leader is one who recognizes this and insists upon a culture of responsiveness. Whether the communication is email, voice mail, a note or a a tweet, responding shows you care and gives your customers and colleagues a say, allowing them to make a positive impact on the organization. Responding takes a conscious effort and builds mind control.

empowernetworkresponsiveness

The act of responding requires one to look at the circumstance, identify the problem or situation, hear what is happening and reflect. That reflection can be for a moment, five seconds, one hour, two days or longer. The time frame doesn’t matter. What matters is that you stopped and put an effort to think and suspended judgment. It is a conscious act and shows that you are willing to listen or observe. This between the circumstance and your behavior is what contributes to gaining a sense of control in your life.

Once a person can identify that in responding they actually have a choice in the manner, he/she will start to realize that they are able to make better decisions. The key is that pause. If the situation requires an immediate action, then just take a deep breath first. This alone can help one gain a semblance of control and make one choose an alternative statement or action that can make a big difference in an outcome of a situation. Making an effort to respond helps you establish control and will get you closer to what you want.

Hello my friend, on your quest to become a better leader, I want to share Simple Concept #5 today and that is to become a better team player. Here is a quote I like, “Individuals play the game, but teams beat the odds.” -SEAL Team Saying

empowernetworkteamplayer2

No matter how small your organization, you interact with others every day. Letting others shine, encouraging innovative ideas, practicing humility, and following other rules for working in teams will help you become a more likeable leader. You’ll need a culture of success within your organization, one that includes out-of-the-box thinking.

A few nights ago I was reading an article in Forbes Magazine title Five Ways to Become a Better Team Player by Dorie Clark, and she points to Harvard Business School professor Amy Edmondson, author of the new book, Teaming: How Organizations Learn, Innovate, and Compete in the Knowledge Economy, on her experience and knowledge of 5 ways to becoming a better team player.

Here are the highlights:
Create Ground Rules It’s a myth that the best creative teams are disorganized, says Edmondson. Instead, they’re only chaotic within certain boundaries. She suggests codifying a rigorous process of action, reflection, then new action and new reflection. The goal is to learn from your mistakes each and every time.

Ensure everyone participates. If you actually tape-record team conversations, says Edmondson, you’ll be surprised to diagnose the transcript and see how rare genuine questions are. Why don’t we do it? We’re too busy telling and not asking. It’s easy for groups to be dominated by the loudest voices; don’t let it happen. Literally going around the room to ensure everyone has spoken up can introduce an element of airtime equity.

Don’t assume others know what you do. Says Edmondson, I do exercises in the classroom with managers where I’ve deliberately distributed the information needed to solve the problem through the group but eight times out of 10 they fail the problem because they haven’t shared the information. Why? It’s very rarely an intentional gambit to hoard information-as-power, she says. Instead, people will say it all the time in the debrief I assumed everybody knew this. Don’t risk a bad guess: share your information.

Share, analyze, decide. Your group process should first require team members to share what they already know about a problem, then analyze alternatives, and then make a decision. Not working? Rinse and repeat but do it systematically.

Failure means succeeding at learning. Many employees can become paralyzed at the thought of failure but taking risks is essential to innovation and creativity (as I discuss in my recent Forbes post on Why Leaders Should Embrace Being Wrong). To inspire your teammates, says Edmondson, Get curious, look around, model the behaviors you hope to see openness, fallibility, and humor. The right mindset shouldn’t be about succeeding or failing in a given performance; rather, it’s an exploration where you learn each time.

empowernetworkteamplayer

Now of course with your experience in leadership, you can add many more ideas and caveats about being a better team player and I want to ask you, what are your secrets for being a great team player?

For today, I want to share simple concepts 3 and 4 of becoming a better leader, which are authenticity and transparency. These 2 concepts should reach very close to home to you because it’s all about You. Read these two great quotes here about the need for authenticity and transparency:
“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” -Oprah Winfrey
“As a small businessperson, you have no greater leverage than the truth.” -John Whittier

empowernetworkauthentic

Authenticity and Transparency
Great leaders are who they say they are, and they have integrity beyond compare. Vulnerability and humility are hallmarks of the authentic leader and create a positive, attractive energy. Customers, employees, and media all want to help an authentic person to succeed. There used to be a divide between one’s public self and private self, but the social internet has blurred that line. Tomorrow’s leaders are transparent about who they are online, merging their personal and professional lives together.

There is nowhere to hide anymore, and business people who attempt to keep secrets will eventually be exposed. Openness and honesty lead to happier staff and customers and colleagues. More important, transparency makes it a lot easier to sleep at night – unworried about what you said to whom, a happier leader is a more productive one.

I wrote about the first concept to becoming a better leader which was to become a better listener. For today, let’s go into the 2nd of 11 Simple Concepts of becoming a better leader by Dave Kerpen. Here is a quote that is true in every sense of the word; “Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today.” -Robert McAfee Brown

Leaders need to tell great stories in order to sell their products, but more important, in order to sell their ideas. Storytelling is what captivates people and drives them to take action. Whether you’re telling a story to one prospect over lunch, a boardroom full of people, or thousands of people through an online video – storytelling wins customers.

empowernetworkstorytelling2

Why should your businesses care about storytelling?
Dave believes that storytelling is important because people don’t care about you. It’s really important to truly listen because people would rather talk about themselves.

Storytelling is much more effective than going through data or any kind of sales pitch. It connects people, and gets people engaged and interested. The reason why people love going to the movies and reading books is because we love to be engaged by stories. Whether you are at a boardroom talking to your staff, or pitching to a prospect or putting content out there to the world, storytelling can bring your business alive. It can help you connect with your audience. And it can eventually persuade people.

What makes a good story?
When Dave thinks about storytelling, he goes to the analogy of a movie, book or television show. If he is crafting a story, he wants to think like a director or an author. Stories should have a beginning, a middle and an end. The story should also have some conflict and have at least one, preferably more, interesting characters that people can believe in.

Your ability to take a piece of history and turn it into a story has to do with applying the traditional elements of storytelling with what really happens. You need to be truthful, but you can embellish a little bit. Make the characters come alive. Make sure you set the stage and build a story that resonates with people.

Storytelling today is a lot easier, cheaper and a lot less of a risk. With today’s technology, if it doesn’t resonate with people, you can re-cut it or try something new. We can all keep practicing storytelling until we get it right. In your growth to become a better leader, try different ways that you can share your story.

In business, here is a great question to consider when it comes to storytelling. How do you cross over from storytelling to selling?

Some of the most successful business books of all time at their core are a collection of stories. Although Likeable Business is a business book and Dave is a business owner, to him it’s like social media you can use all the best content in the world, but if it doesn’t drive sales, none of it matters.

It’s the same with storytelling. You can be the best storyteller in the world, but if you’re a business owner and you are telling that story and you are not converting people to becoming customers, then it’s virtually meaningless.

The process of taking people from actively listening to a story to actively listening to a sales pitch has to be subtle. If you’ve done a good job with prospecting and listening, then this process can be natural. But if you have the wrong people in the room and they don’t have a need for what you sell, then the best story in the world is not going to mean anything.

The first step is making sure you’ve done your homework, you’ve listened and you’ve prospected right. The next step is to help to connect the dots for people from the start.

As powerful as your story is, it still needs to convey I can solve your problems. Your overall goal isn’t to become the best storyteller in the world, but to grow your business. You’re going to develop a story that helps people connect the dots between what their problems are and how you can solve them.

Now think about all of your experiences and lessons learned throughout your life and business career and use storytelling the next time you are with your customers and team, to get over the point or the message you want to make.
