Getting Value from Your Event Experience

This is the time of the year where a lot of events are happening and if you are like me, in that you are planning in advance, how you are going to get the most value from your event experience. These events maybe your company event or a general event in your area of focus. You blocked the dates on your calendar, purchased your ticket, booked your flights and room and now you are ready for the world!

Here are a few tips with to help you maximize your event experience and get the most value out of it.

Tip #1 – Arrive to the event early 
It’s a good idea to arrive to the event at least a day early. This way you are not stressed about rushing to the event the morning of. What if your flight is delayed and you miss part of the event? Also arriving early gives you a change to meet and network with others who are their for the event.

Tip #2 – Find out and research the speakers before you show up
Take the time to learn more about the line up of speakers so you can be better prepared for what you are going to learn. You may find you are more interested in certain speakers than others or find you have things in common. You may want to research the product they sell as well in case some of them will be offering products or services at the event.

Tip #3 – Do a little research on who is attending
If you have access to see who is attending the event, it’s a good idea to do a little research and make a list of specific people you want to meet. If there is a Facebook group or page for the event, join it and get to know the other attendees. Having a specific list of people you want to network with can really help you reach your goals.

Tip #4 – Have business cards
Yes you need business cards. There seams to be a trend out there right now of “I don’t do business cards” , especially in the Internet Marketing world. In my opinion when people say that they are really saying, “I don’t care about networking or I’m too important for you.” Make sure you have a business card that really stands out so people will remember you. When you get business cards at the event, make sure you write a note on the card so you remember what it is that sets that person apart. This will help you remember all the people you meet. Make sure you enter these contacts into some kind of tracking system where you keep track of everyone you met and follow up immediately after the event.

Tip #5 – Sit up front
Sitting as close to the front is always recommended so you are not distracted and can concentrate. Many times you will notice that top income earners and leaders sit up front. There is a reason for this! You never know when one golden nugget will be shared at your event and by sitting up front you will have the best chance to catch it!

Tip $#6 – Network outside the event
One of the best things about events is the Networking! Most of the time this happens during breaks, at lunch and in the evening after the event. Take advantage of this instead of just going back to your room and vegging out. You never know who you will meet at an event and how it will impact your business. Make sure you take every opportunity you can to do so. Sometimes at events, people will network in the halls during different speakers. Leave it up to your judgement to do so, but be aware it’s very rude to the person who is speaking so keep it to a minimum.

Tip #7 – Have fun!
Have fun at your event. Loosen up a bit and remember to smile. Most people are attracted to others that are happy, confident and genuine. If there are outside activities going on, participate in them and enjoy yourself.
The bottom line about events…

Events drive growth in your business. I always recommend that you attend at least 3 events a year.
