The People In Your Life Can Make the Difference

When I look back at my life I remember that I really did have some cool friends and people period that I used to hang out with. Yeah sure, we got into a few mishaps and of course we had to pay the price, however we all still had a positive outlook on life and our future. We all felt like if we just kept a good attitude, took care of our business and give our best to whatever cause or purpose we set for ourselves, things would work out in our favor. I want to give credos to our parents and mentors that stayed on us every step of the way.

Fast forward to adulthood and in my working career, I’m starting to notice that many people really don’t have any goals or know what to do with their life! Guess what? There was a time when I fell into this category and didn’t know what to do with my life and I had no real goals! Interesting isn’t it? Then I learned from many mentors like Jim Rohn that you have to surround yourself with positive people and people that have what you want in life. This quote below sums it up perfect:

Look at the people in your life and take inventory of what kind of value, if any, they are bringing into your life. Also ask yourself what value are you bringing in that person’s life. Better yet, ask them what kind of value are you bringing into their life. If there is no value and you feel yourself being pulled down from some of the people in your life, you have the power and the permission to make changes.

No More Phone Calls Ever? Well, it Depends…

Wow, I was cleaning out my attic and going through some old business forms and got a kick out of seeing all of my old prospecting and phone call lists from a few years ago. Pounding the phones was standard operating procedure for me during my insurance sales career and I must admit, I was pretty good at it, being called and asked to train other sales agents about getting leads and sales from the telephone. Seeing those old prospecting lists cracked me up, because now I probably make less than 20 phone calls a week and sometimes this is too much depending on what business line of products being discussed.

By using online business systems to earn a living, it’s hard to imagine making phone calls quite like I did back then. I get emails sometimes asking why I don’t return phone calls anymore! The short answer would be instead of pounding the phones making 100-200 calls for 8-10 hours a day, now I have a 4-5 hour work day and accomplish WAY more and SUPPORT more people at the same time, using different online business systems and resources.

Please don’t get me wrong, I do believe that depending on what business or industry you are in that the phone calls can play a vital role in your business. Even with the online business model, I encourage my team and new business partners coming on board, that if there is a certain level of income or product sales you are trying to reach, you want to do whatever it takes to get you there and many times phone calls coupled with our online strategies can do this for you. Your centers of influence and people that you know on a personal basis, yes sure give them a call to introduce them to your business opportunity.

However as you are building your team, you will come to realize that there is not enough time in the day to be on the phones calling out to prospects and then returning calls to both prospects and team members to render the service and support that they need as well as creating business income streams to support your lifestyle.

One of the biggest reasons I fell head over heels for the online business model was because this system would allow me the time freedom to do things with my family, organizations and other activities that I hold dear and also the financial freedom to fund these and other activities. Having my online business systems frees up time for me and my business partners to think and create as oppose to feeling tied down to my desk at a job. Using online resources like webinars, google hangouts, skype, screensharing, etc… condense 8 hours of time on the phone down to 2-3 hours on webinars asnswering questions on a group setting instead of 1 person on each call.

*Here is an important note to keep in mind about the phones. To get people to join your business, returning phone calls  are so much more powerful that actually picking up the phone and making cold calls on a list or yellow pages. When returning calls at least you know, in some sorts, that you have someone showing an interest in what you do.

I must admit that from time to time even with all of my online systems in place, I still like the feeling I get when I return a call and talk to someone interested in what I do and we become business partners. I guess those old phone call roots will never totally go away, so it’s kinda the best of both worlds.

Your Dreams and Ideas Can Cause a Loss of Friends

I want you to think about this and I mean really sit down and put some deep thought into what I am about to ask you. You may lose some friends over this and I really hope not however at the very least, you may think a little different after you see how your friends and even family members feel after you go through this exercise with them.

Close your eyes and imagine sitting at the table with let’s say 10 of your closest friends or family members. You guys are talking and enjoying each other’s company like normal and now think of one of your biggest and boldest dreams that you have always wanted to achieve but for whatever reason or excuse, it hasn’t happen yet in your life. Let’s put those reasons or excuses behind us now and let’s just say that now we have finally mustered enough courage to go after it.

So you tell all of the 10 people at the table what your dream or ideas are and that you are going for it. You know your friends and how they process information and the words they will use to let you know what they have on their mind, what do you think will be their initial response when they hear about this big, bold, audacious dream or idea coming out of your mouth? Will it be that you have lost your mind or that your idea won’t work.

Do you think you will hear that you could do it and what could they do to help you. On the surface you probably may think that they all would agree that you could do it and they would be there to support you. But have you really thought about it and come up with this conclusion? If so, then Wow, you have some great friends and why have you waited so long to get on with your dreams?

However, the most common answer and one that makes you go hmmmm, is that not all ten of your peeps sitting at the table, will be on your side like you think. You may have a clue about 2 or 3 that will believe you can do it however it’s always that one or two that surprises you and reveal that they don’t think you can. Yes you will have a couple that will tell you to go for it but later may get behind your back and say that you have lost your mind! Well, some might even say that they are “just keeping it real” and that you don’t have what it takes to accomplish that “big hairy” dream of yours and guess what? They may very well be right in saying so based on what you have done in your past up until now.

But that’s just it! When you start down that path of going after your dreams and becoming a better you, people may not follow or believe in you based on where you’ve been but they will follow you on where you are going. Some will follow quicker than others however it all starts with you!

Just because they don’t support your idea or believe in you enough doesn’t mean you scratch them off of your list. They still may have value in other areas of your life, right? But when it comes to playing big in life and being all that you can be, you need to have people, have a team in place that can challenge, encourage and lift your mindset to the level of your dreams or higher. Let’s be honest here, when it comes to playing it big in life and going after your dreams, most people are not there yet; they are just playing life safe and not taking any chances on themselves.

That’s what this post is all about to get you to thinking about your dreams, your current position and the people you carry your dreams and your ideas to. I want you to push the envelope and start dreaming again, start giving yourself more chances because deep inside you truly have what it takes. This is what my team and the mastermind of leaders are doing when we get on the calls, the google hangouts, the live conferences and event. We are sharing our dreams, sharing our accomplishments and hearing from a group of likeminds that, Yes You can do it, Yes you can achieve it!

Do we sugarcoat things and tell you that it will be easy, Heck NO! In fact, it will probably be the hardest thing you will ever attempt to do coupled with the fact that there are no guarantees that you will accomplish anything. It’s scary, real scary however you do have what it takes to make it happen all you need to do is believe and find an environment of achievers that can push you along the way!

This is a simple post however has in my opinion, the bulk of what it takes to become a leader.
Passion

Those who love what they do don’t have to work a day in their lives. People who are able to bring passion to their business have a remarkable advantage, as that passion is contagious to customers and colleagues alike. Finding and increasing your passion will absolutely affect your bottom line.

Ask yourself the question of, “What are You passionate about? What would you do and have no problem doing even if it didn’t pay much money? What make you feel good about doing, in short, what wakes you up in the morning having you raring to go! Now here is the key that most successful entrepreneurs have figured out. They have figured out how to make money with their passion.

As a leader you also have to be passionate about people. One of my mentors always say that, “No matter what you are doing, what industry or business you are in, the bottom line is that it is a people’s business.” You have to be passionate about helping people become their better selves. Encourage and empower others should be one of our foundational pillars when we get a chance to step on that leadership platform.

You remember the quote, “Nobody cares about how much you know until they know how much you care.” As a leader, a simple tip is to have passion for what you are doing and care about the people that you are leading. Facing Your Giants!

GIANTSI don’t know about you but this picture is crystal clear to me that the green guy is in way over his head. He’s big, strong andmenacing looking but I Believe I can take him down! This was a fun picture because every time I walked by this huge Incredible Hulk, I felt the need to take him on. I guess that’s the “little boy” inside of me that still likes to imagine all kinds of ideas and challenges.

However there was a question that immediately came to mind after I took the picture. Are you facing your giants in life? Are you facing those obstacles, mountains and giants that are standing between you and success? These seemingly “Big” giants could be in the form of financial and health issues, people’s negative comments or attitudes about your ideas and your dreams.

There is no getting around it, if you are striving to be all that you can be, striving to help and make a difference in the lives of others, you will face some giants on your journey.

When looking at this picture, two thoughts can come to mnd. One is that I’m too small and the giant will have an easy fight or the second thought is if he’s crazy and brave enough to face it, he may think and believe he has a chance of winning. That’s the lesson right there… be brave enough to Believe that you can Win! I think about the Bible story of David fighting and beating Goliath because he first believed and trusted in a God who is bigger than any Goliath or Giants he will ever face. Then he boldly faced Goliath and took him down.

The Giant still has that menacing face looking on his face and I’m smiling. That’s how it is with those haters and dream killers, they will still keep talking and critizing you, while you are on your way moving forward on the journey.  Just smile and keep giving them something to be mad about! So when you are facing your giants, go in belief that victory is on the other side;  Stand Tall!

Do Leaders Make Bad Managers?

Leaders are bad Managers! Alright Leaders hold up, wait a minute, take a deep breath… calm down! I just thought I would title this post this way to get your attention and blood flowing a little bit. This is a pretty lengthy post however if you are a leader, a manager or a director of some kind, I know this will help you along the way.

I want to briefly share my personal story when I was working in Corporate America as a Business Manager along with another manager housed in the same branch office overseeing the team also. It took me a few months to realize that the way that I was going about things, in this particular office, would drive me to an early grave and if I wanted to continue in that role as a Business manager, I would need to adjust and tailor my way of working like the other manager. The other manager would sit in his office with his door close the majority of time and take calls, do reports, document the comings and goings of his team and at the end of the day, he would let me know who came in 10 minutes late or left 5 minutes early. I, on the other hand, would meet with each one of the team members, develop a personal game-plan for the month, host and attend networking meetings, perform coaching sessions using different sales strategies and even coming in early or staying late if needed.

As much as I needed to do all of the detailed documenting stuff, I just didn’t like sitting in the office doing paperwork when all of the action was happening on the outside. Really, when would I find the time to document all of my coaching sessions and 1 on 1 meetings, look at kronos time logs and know what time someone left for break or how long it took someone to eat their ham and cheese sandwich. To me, having the door closed, writing reports and watching kronos time logs, was a waste of time. The team was new and truly needed someone to engage, guide and lead them as oppose to someone watching their every move from literally behind closed doors and writing it down to be used sometimes against them than for them. Even when we would have an all managers meeting, I just couldn’t believe that we would spend more time discussing paperwork, the previous month’s reports, etc… than we would looking ahead, looking at the big picture and what we were doing to capture more market share.

I used to love it when we would be at the meetings and conferences with the “Big Guns” and they would mention my leadership skills and how as a leader, things with the company was looking up. However the company and the office culture was already set long before I got there and having a manager to manage the team through detailed paperwork and documents was actually what the majority preferred and was used to rather than having a someone come in to lead the troops by vision, trust and engagement. I was fighting a losing battle with the culture and was working myself on a fast track of burnout while the other manager would still be sitting there 25 – 30 years later with the door closed. I have always felt that there is a difference between being a leader and being a manager and when I came across this article a few days ago, in my humble opinion, it made perfect sense.

**Leadership and management are very different skills. Yet most of the time, we expect corporate executives to wow us with their detail-oriented approach to management and then suddenly metamorphose into visionary leaders the moment they’re promoted. It doesn’t usually work out, says Annmarie Neal, the author of the forthcoming Leading from the Edge (ASTD Press, 2013). “A leader is somebody who sees opportunity and puts change in motion. A manager is somebody who follows that leader and sees how to structure things to create value for the company,” she says. “I’ve found that the best leaders weren’t really good managers. Yes, they understood the discipline, but they weren’t the best accountant, or the best technical person, or the best brand manager. They can do it, but they have a way of [thinking about the issues] at another level.”

Of course, great leaders can’t eschew management altogether. When it comes to what Neal calls “the act of management – the 1950s and 1960s B-school management theory of analysis, planning, process, structure, and order,” it’s important for leaders to grasp its importance, and know how to supervise. But that doesn’t mean they need to do it themselves. “You need to understand there’s a discipline called management, and it’s valuable, and you can’t just be chaotic,” Neal says. “Facebook figured that out and that’s why they hired Sheryl Sandberg [as COO].”

Sandberg, with her wide-ranging skills, may be an exception. But in general, it’s very hard to find top talent that excels both in leadership and management. “Planning to the nth degree,” a hallmark of management, “bothers really good leaders,” says Neal. “They’re trying to figure out opportunities – what’s at the edge, the adjacencies, the disruptive space 3-4 steps away. They’re making social and political connections, and that uses a different part of the brain.” Meanwhile, top managers may be too detail-oriented to thrive as big picture thinkers. “It can be a hard transition for a really good manager to let go of those controls,” says Neal.

So why do we insist that leaders must rise from the ranks of managers? Neal says it’s the misguided legacy of performance reviews and how executives have traditionally been evaluated. “A lot of organizational process today stems from management in the industrial age,” she says. “It’s almost Taylorism; let’s ‘widget’ everything. But how do you ‘widget’ innovation? We have to step back and let the processes go, or somehow redesign them.”

In Leading from the Edge, she profiles one older executive who was on track for the C-suite and took a major assignment to develop a new international market for his company – a critical assignment, but one marked (as almost all new efforts are) by some missteps. “He was charting new territory for the company and the company was evaluating his performance based on traditional, core, S-curve values, but he was off building these new S-curves. How do you value a new, never-been-done-before business unit?” The executive believes his career stalled as a result. “It’s so easy to be a manager,” says Neal. “You’re rewarded for it, and probably you’re safer. You’ll ‘get better grades’ for it.”

In a study she conducted when she was a top executive at a Fortune 500 firm, she discovered that “people who were out of the box, pushing the edge, thinking in terms of the horizon…got lower [performance] ratings than the people who could show crazy execution on nonsense.” It’s a huge mistake – and a missed opportunity – for corporations, she says. You have to be able to evaluate managers and leaders on the criteria that matter most for each: “You’ve got to change that system. You can’t really want a system where you say, ‘I prefer you to drive nonsense…and that matters more than the person who puts their neck on the line.’”

Finally, here we are at the end of this post and I must say, every time I read this article, I immediately recognize my growth from this corporate management position. I realize that as a leader, I needed to implement some of those other “managerial” duties in my business practice in order to stay ahead of the curve. This taught me further about having and using systems to work on my behalf and the things that I do best continue doing them.

Leading and managing is also all about your personality, your work style and people skill’s will assist you in what role will come naturally to you. Yes, I hit that burnout stage and left the company and since then have been blessed to create the company and culture that fits me and my team and the other stuff is outsourced or delegated to others that are built for it.
